The Heartbleed Bug and Online Safety and Security

At Hopewell Valley Community Bank, your online safety and security is important to us. HVCBank worked aggressively with our core operators and major vendors to verify the security of their systems. All of our technology partners have confirmed that their systems were not affected or immediately installed patches to eliminate the Heartbleed zero-day vulnerability. HVCBank continues to monitor and evaluate the situation in conjunction with the security community and our technology partners.

While HVCBank has no evidence of a compromise of any kind to user accounts as a result of the Heartbleed vulnerability, it is in your best interests to change your HVCBank online banking password.

Since internet usage affects us all, you should also take precautions when accessing other websites as well. You can help protect yourself and your personal information by using unique IDs and passwords on the various websites you visit as well as adopting the following password security best practices:

• Change your password frequently

• Use a password that contains at least 8 characters and is significantly different from previous passwords

• Use a password for your banking accounts that you don't use anywhere else

• Include, at a minimum, letters and numbers in your password

• Make sure it does not contain your user name, real name, company name, or a complete word

• Even better, also include special characters in your password such as ~!@#$%^&*( )_-+={ }[ ] |< >?/

• Store passwords securely. If you feel you must write down your password in order to remember it, make sure you don't label it as your password, and keep it in a safe place

• Don't leave passwords where others can find them

• Never share your password

Here are some additional important tips to consider to enhance your online security and provide greater peace of mind:

• Never provide account information to someone who contacts you by telephone or email

• Never share username and password information with anyone, including third-party providers

• Avoid using an automatic login feature that saves usernames and passwords

• Do not use public or other unsecured computers where you input usernames and passwords

• Never conduct secure transactions while multiple browsers are open on your computer

• Confirm the last login date/time every time you log in

• Whenever possible, use Bill Pay instead of checks to limit account number exposure for better electronic record keeping

• Take advantage of and regularly view HVCBank Online alerts to receive messages regarding certain activity in your account, balance alerts, payments due, time to reset your password, etc.

• An FBI recommended best practice is a dedicated PC solely for financial transactions (e.g., no web browsing, emails, or social media)

You can also visit StaySafeOnline.org for more information on using the internet safely.

HVCBank will keep you updated on any changes to this development. If you have additional questions, please email us at info@hvcbonline.com or call us at 609-466-2900.
